October 2026 Nature Calendar

The gentle art of noticing autumn's beauty.

October invites us to slow our pace and delight in the season: brilliant leaves, crisp mornings, migrating birds, woodland fungi, and golden afternoon light. This calendar offers a simple nature prompt for every day of the month, whether you have fifteen minutes in the backyard or a whole afternoon on a woodland trail.

Inspired by Charlotte Mason and Anna Botsford Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study, it encourages attentive observation, sketching, and journaling, one quiet discovery at a time.

This month's themes:

• Autumn trees: leaf color, bark, acorns, and evergreens
• The forest floor: mushrooms, moss, lichens, and fallen logs
• Wildlife preparing for winter: squirrels, migrating birds, and tracks
• Seeds and autumn plants: seed heads, grasses, and pinecones
• Sky and weather: sunsets, moon phases, and morning frost

Suggested supplies: a nature journal, pencils or watercolor pencils, and a magnifying glass. Binoculars, a local field guide, and a small basket for fallen treasures are lovely extras.
